The synopsis
William Bechtel, born in 1951, is an American philosopher and emeritus professor specializing in the philosophy of life sciences. His academic career includes professorships at Georgia State University, Washington University in St. Louis (where he also served as Chair of the Philosophy Department and was involved with the Philosophy-Psychology-Neuroscience program), and the University of California, San Diego. Bechtel holds a BA from Kenyon College and a PhD from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on areas such as cell biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, and cognitive science. A key aspect of his work is the promotion of a mechanistic approach to the philosophy of science. He argues that scientific explanations often involve specifying mechanisms, a perspective he believes is more aligned with the methodologies of life scientists than traditional deductive, law-based models. Beyond his mechanistic philosophy, Bechtel has also explored the nature of scientific discovery and contributed to the field as the long-time editor of the journal "Philosophical Psychology."
