The synopsis
Wang Gen (1483–1541) was a prominent Chinese Neo-Confucian philosopher of the Ming dynasty. He is best known for popularizing the teachings of Wang Yangming, making them more accessible to a wider audience. Wang Gen is considered the founder of the Taizhou School (泰州學派), a significant branch of Neo-Confucianism that emerged during the Ming era. This school emphasized the innate moral knowledge within each individual and advocated for the practical application of philosophical principles in everyday life. Wang Gen's philosophy challenged the traditional intellectual hierarchy, asserting that enlightenment and moral understanding were attainable by common people, not just scholars or officials. His emphasis on practical ethics and self-cultivation resonated with many and contributed to the intellectual and social currents of his time.
