He is recognized for his work in geophysics and very low frequency (VLF) electromagnetic radiation. İnan earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1972 and 1973, respectively. He pursued his doctoral research at Stanford University, where he obtained a Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1977 under the guidance of Robert Helliwell. İnan began his academic career at Stanford as a research affiliate, later becoming an assistant professor in 1982, associate professor in 1985, and a full professor in 1992. From 1997 to 2009, he directed the Space, Telecommunications and Radio Science Laboratories (STAR) at Stanford. His research interests at Stanford encompassed geophysics, near-space, ionospheric and atmospheric physics, radiation belts, electromagnetic wave-particle interactions, and VLF radioscience. He has mentored approximately 50 Ph.D. students. From 2009 to 2021, İnan served as the president of Koç University. He was granted professor emeritus status at Stanford in 2011, while continuing his active involvement there and at Koç University. İnan has authored over 323 refereed scientific and technical papers. Together with his brother, Aziz İnan, he has co-authored three textbooks on electromagnetics, including "Engineering Electromagnetics" and "Electromagnetic Waves." He has received several awards, including the Allan V. Cox Medal for Faculty Excellence in Fostering Undergraduate Research (2007) and the Mustafa Prize (2019). He is also a member of various professional organizations, such as the IEEE, the International Radio Science Association, and the American Physical Society.
