Tommy J. Curry is an American scholar, author, and professor of philosophy. He holds a Personal Chair in Africana philosophy and Black male studies at the University of Edinburgh. Curry's academic background includes a master's degree from DePaul University and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Southern Illinois University. His dissertation focused on the political philosophy of Derrick Bell. Curry's research areas include critical race theory, Black male studies, and Africana philosophy. His book, "The Man-Not: Race, Class, Genre, and the Dilemmas of Black Manhood," received the American Book Award in 2018 and has been noted for its controversial discussions on race, class, genre, and Black manhood, including topics like rape during American slavery and the experiences of Black males within their communities. He is also recognized for his work in advocating for a new field of study focused on racialized men and boys. Curry's second monograph, "Another white Man's Burden: Josiah Royce's Quest for a Philosophy of white Racial Empire," published in 2018, won the Josiah Royce Prize in American Idealist Thought in 2020. In 2017, he was targeted by alt-right and neo-Nazi websites for comments made on a podcast, which colleagues and media outlets like Snopes stated were taken out of context. Curry has also received the Alain Locke Award and was recognized as one of the Top 15 Emerging Scholars of Color by Diverse Magazine.
