The synopsis
Taketani Mitsuo was a prominent Japanese theoretical physicist and Marxist intellectual. He published his *Doctrine of the Three Stages of Scientific Development* in 1936, which is considered the first Japanese contribution to the philosophy of science. His work applied Hegel's theory of dialectics to the development of scientific understanding. He was jailed in 1938 due to his contributions to the Marxist journal *Sekai Bunka* but was released with the help of Yoshio Nishina. Taketani collaborated with renowned physicists Hideki Yukawa and Shoichi Sakata. After World War II, he co-founded 'Science of Thought' and was actively involved in nuclear issues. He held professorships at Rikkyō University and other institutions, and played a role in establishing nuclear safety research groups.
