The synopsis
Taha Abderrahmane, born on May 28, 1944, in El Jadida, Morocco, is a distinguished Moroccan philosopher and one of the most prominent intellectuals in the Arab and Islamic spheres. His academic journey began in Morocco, with further studies at the Sorbonne in Paris, where he earned multiple degrees, including a doctorate in philosophy. Abderrahmane is fluent in several languages, including Arabic, French, and English, and has reading knowledge of German, Latin, and Ancient Greek, enabling him to engage with philosophical texts in their original languages. He served as a professor of philosophy of language and logic at Mohammad V University in Rabat from 1970 until his retirement in 2005. His work is characterized by a blend of logical analysis, linguistic derivation, and a framework informed by Islamic heritage and modern Western thought. Abderrahmane's philosophy often appears in a moral and deliberative style, addressing key areas such as the philosophy of language, logic, morality, and contractarian ethics. He champions the concept of multiple modernities, striving to establish an ethical and humanitarian modernity grounded in the values and principles of Islam and Arab tradition.
