The synopsis
Sydney Sparkes Orr (6 December 1914 – 15 July 1966) was a British philosopher who held the position of Professor of Philosophy at the University of Tasmania. He became embroiled in the "Orr case", a significant academic scandal that unfolded in the 1950s. Born in Belfast in 1914, Orr pursued his academic career after obtaining a BA with first-class honours and an MA with special commendation from Queen's University. He subsequently taught at the University of St Andrews and the University of Melbourne before being appointed to the chair of philosophy at the University of Tasmania in 1952. Orr's tenure was marked by controversy when the University dismissed him in 1955 due to allegations of sexual relations with an undergraduate student. Despite his denials, Orr's legal challenges to the Tasmanian Supreme Court and the High Court of Australia were unsuccessful. This event led to widespread debate among academics, with many supporting Orr, claiming he was denied fair treatment and suggesting he was made a scapegoat for challenging university authorities. Orr died in 1966 from pulmonary emboli, shortly after reaching a financial settlement with the university.
