The synopsis
Stasys Šalkauskis (May 16, 1886 – December 4, 1941) was a prominent Lithuanian Catholic philosopher, educator, and rector of Vytautas Magnus University. Born in Ariogala, Lithuania, he was the son of a doctor and former mayor of Šiauliai. Šalkauskis initially studied law at Imperial Moscow University, where he encountered nihilist and positivist philosophies, prompting a crisis of faith that led him to seek answers in Catholicism. He later earned a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Fribourg in 1920. From 1922 to 1940, he taught philosophy at Vytautas Magnus University, serving as its rector from 1939 to 1940. He was also a co-founder of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science in 1922. His marriage to Julija Paltarokaitė, a former student, took place in 1927. Following the Soviet occupation of Lithuania, Šalkauskis was dismissed from his university position and died in December 1941 due to ill health. His philosophical work explored the stages of life as nature, culture, and religion, emphasizing religion as the ultimate fulfillment of human desires, contingent on a developed culture. He distinguished between inner cultural richness and material civilization. Šalkauskis proposed a theory of Lithuanian civilization as a synthesis of "Western" and "Eastern" cultures, positioning Lithuania with a central role in European history. He based his nationalism on Christian universalism, critiquing chauvinistic interpretations. He also developed a concept of "full democracy" rooted in Christian philosophy, proposing a novel constitutional structure with a three-house parliament and separation of powers. Šalkauskis is regarded as one of Lithuania's most influential Christian philosophers, impacting thinkers like Antanas Maceina and Juozas Girnius.
