The synopsis

Sidi Mohamed Barkat, born in 1948, is an Algerian philosopher based in Paris. He holds a position as an associate researcher at the psychology of work and action laboratory within the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers. His academic work has primarily delved into questions of epistemology within the social sciences. Between 1998 and 2004, Barkat led a research program at the Collège international de philosophie in Paris. This program focused on the representation and lived experience of "the native Algerian." A key contribution from Barkat is his conceptualization of the *corps d'exception*, or "body of exclusion." This framework, derived from his analysis of the Algerian population's experiences during the French occupation, examines how colonial power structures and practices create and maintain exclusionary categories of people. His work intersects with broader discussions on the treatment of indigenous populations and has been cited and applied by other scholars such as Pierre Tevanian, Gérard Bras, Daniel Borrillo, Patricia Mothes, Malika Mansouri, Olivier Le Cour Grandmaison, Claire Hancock, and Vincent Houillon.
