The synopsis
Sharyn Clough (born 14 May 1965) is an American philosopher and a professor of philosophy at Oregon State University. She earned her BA Hons in Social Psychology from the University of Calgary in 1987 and her MA in Social Scientific Study of Religion in 1989. She completed her PhD in History and Philosophy of Science and Women's Studies at Simon Fraser University in 1997. Before joining Oregon State University in 2003, she held teaching positions at Hamilton College, Le Moyne College, Rowan University, and the University of Tennessee. Clough's work explores the intricate connections between science and politics, and the possibilities for objectivity within this complex relationship. Her research has examined the potential links between gender socialization and differences in allergies, asthma, and autoimmune disorders, highlighting how politically engaged research can enhance objectivity. This project garnered international attention. More recently, her public philosophy research emphasizes the significance of basic peace skills, or Peace Literacy, for engaging in deliberations on controversial science policies, such as mandatory vaccinations, and for broader conflict resolution. Clough directs the Phronesis Lab at OSU, where she collaborates with students to develop and evaluate curricula for teaching Peace Literacy as phronesis, or practical wisdom. She also serves as the Peace Literacy Curriculum Coordinator, working with educators to design and test Peace Literacy curricula in classrooms across the United States and Canada.
