The synopsis

Seydi Ali Reis (1498–1563), also known as Katib-i Rumi, Galatalı, or Sidi Ali Çelebi, was an Ottoman admiral and navigator. He played a significant role in Ottoman naval history, commanding the left wing of the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Preveza in 1538 and later serving as the commander of the Ottoman fleet in the Indian Ocean. During his tenure in the Indian Ocean, he engaged with Portuguese forces multiple times and sought to unite Muslim countries against them. His most enduring legacy lies in his written works. He authored several books, including the travelogue "Mir'ât ül Memâlik" (The Mirror of Countries, 1557), which chronicles his arduous journey back to Constantinople from India, and navigational and astronomical works like "Mir’ât-ı Kâinât" (Mirror of the Universe) and "Kitâb ül Muhit: El Muhit fî İlmi'l Eflâk ve'l Buhûr" (Book of the Regional Seas and the Science of Astronomy and Navigation). These works contain valuable information on navigation techniques, astronomical observations, and descriptions of ports and coastal areas within the Ottoman Empire. His writings have been translated into numerous languages and are recognized as significant contributions to Ottoman literature and maritime knowledge.
