The synopsis
Pavel Tichý (1936–1994) was a Czech logician, philosopher, and mathematician. Born in Brno, Czechoslovakia, he later became a prominent figure in academia in New Zealand. Tichý is best known for developing transparent intensional logic (TIL), an original theory focused on the logical analysis of natural languages. He dedicated a significant portion of his career, approximately 25 years, to this endeavor. His seminal work, 'The Foundations of Frege's Logic,' was published in 1988. Tichý's academic journey included studies at Charles University in Prague, where he also tutored. He left Czechoslovakia in 1968 following the Soviet invasion and eventually settled in New Zealand in 1970, where he taught at the University of Otago, becoming a Professor of Philosophy in 1981. He was known for his strong opinions and direct debating style. In 1993, he was offered the position of Head of the Department of Logic at Charles University in Prague but passed away before assuming the role.
