The synopsis
Hatice Nüzhet Gökdoğan (14 August 1910 – 24 April 2003) was a prominent Turkish astronomer, mathematician, and academic. She is recognized for her significant contributions to astronomy in Turkey, breaking barriers as the first Turkish woman to achieve high-ranking academic positions. Born in Istanbul, Gökdoğan pursued her higher education in France, earning a BSc in mathematics from the University of Lyon and later studying physics at the University of Paris, where she also interned at the Paris Observatory. Upon returning to Turkey in 1934, she joined the faculty of Istanbul University, becoming the first woman on its science faculty. She earned her PhD in 1937 with a dissertation on interstellar dark matter, the first doctoral thesis completed at the university's science faculty. Gökdoğan rose through the academic ranks, becoming a full professor in 1948. In 1954, she made history by being elected Dean of Istanbul University's Faculty of Science, and later chaired the astronomy department from 1958 onwards. Under her leadership, the department expanded significantly, and she actively promoted national and international collaborations. Gökdoğan was also a co-founder of the Turkish Mathematical Society, the Turkish Astronomy Association, and the Turkish University Women's Association. She served as Turkey's first national representative to the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and was a delegate at several of its conferences. She organized astronomy symposiums in Turkey that helped foster interest in building a national observatory. Gökdoğan retired from Istanbul University in 1980. She was married to Mukbil Gökdoğan, an architecture professor and former minister, and they had two children. Her legacy includes her pioneering role as a woman in Turkish academia and her lasting impact on the field of astronomy in her country.
