The Philosopher

Nick Land

The synopsis

Nick Land is an English philosopher renowned for his role in popularizing the ideology of accelerationism and for his contributions to speculative realism. His philosophical output, often deviating from traditional academic conventions, incorporates a wide array of unorthodox and esoteric influences. Much of his work was compiled in the 2011 collection *Fanged Noumena*. During the 1990s, Land was a prominent figure within the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit (CCRU) at the University of Warwick, a collective focused on "theory-fiction." His intellectual inspirations during this period included post-structuralist theorists, leftist thinkers like Georges Bataille and Gilles Deleuze, as well as science fiction, rave culture, and occult traditions. He is credited with coining the term *hyperstition*, referring to self-realizing ideas. Following his departure from Warwick in 1998 and a subsequent period of personal struggles, Land relocated to Shanghai. There, he re-emerged as a significant voice on the political right, becoming a foundational thinker of the Dark Enlightenment (or neo-reactionary movement), advocating for anti-egalitarian and anti-democratic ideas. His later writings explore themes of xenotheology, eschatology, and the potential implications of artificial intelligence.
