The synopsis

Julius Kambarage Nyerere (1922–1999) was a Tanzanian politician, anti-colonial activist, and political theorist who served as Prime Minister of Tanganyika from 1961 to 1962 and President from 1962 to 1964. He subsequently led Tanzania as its first President from 1964 to 1985. As a founding member and chair of the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) and its successor, Chama Cha Mapinduzi, Nyerere promoted African nationalism and African socialism, advocating a political philosophy known as Ujamaa. Born in Butiama, Tanganyika Territory, Nyerere studied at Makerere College in Uganda and Edinburgh University in Scotland. Upon returning to Tanganyika, he became a school teacher and helped form TANU, campaigning for independence through non-violent means inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. Elected to the Legislative Council and then becoming Prime Minister, he negotiated Tanganyika's independence in 1961. His presidency focused on decolonization, Africanization, and promoting national unity. Following the Zanzibar Revolution, Tanganyika unified with Zanzibar to form Tanzania in 1964. Nyerere emphasized national self-reliance and socialism, issuing the Arusha Declaration in 1967, which outlined his vision of Ujamaa. His policies included nationalization of industries, expansion of education and healthcare, and communal farming initiatives. While praised for stabilizing Tanzania and promoting unity, Nyerere's rule also faced criticism for economic mismanagement and authoritarian tendencies. He voluntarily stepped down in 1985, leaving a complex legacy as Tanzania's 'Father of the Nation'.
