The synopsis
Michael Abram Bergmann (born 1964) is an American analytic philosopher associated with Purdue University. He holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in philosophy from the University of Waterloo and a PhD from the University of Notre Dame, where he completed his doctorate in 1997. Since 1997, he has been a faculty member at Purdue University. Bergmann served as the president of the Society of Christian Philosophers from 2016 to 2019. His academic work spans several areas of philosophy, with a particular focus on epistemology and the philosophy of religion. In epistemology, his research often engages with concepts of externalism. In the philosophy of religion, his work addresses the epistemology of religious belief and the problem of evil. He has also contributed to discussions on Alvin Plantinga's evolutionary argument against naturalism and developed skeptical theism in response to the evidential argument from evil.
