The synopsis
Mark Adam Wrathall (born February 1, 1965) is an American philosopher, currently serving as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford and a fellow and tutor at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He is recognized as a significant interpreter of Martin Heidegger's philosophical work. Wrathall's academic journey began with a BA in philosophy from Brigham Young University in 1988, followed by a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School and an MA in philosophy from Boston College in 1991. He further honed his academic credentials by earning a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of California at Berkeley in 1996, where his doctoral advisor was the noted Heidegger scholar Hubert Dreyfus. His dissertation focused on "Unconcealment and Truth".
Wrathall's teaching career commenced as a teaching fellow at Stanford Law School from 1994 to 1996. Subsequently, he taught at Brigham Young University from 1996 to 2006, transitioning from the political science department to the philosophy department. From 2007 to 2017, he held positions at the University of California, Riverside, first as Associate Professor and then as Professor of Philosophy. Since 2017, he has been a Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. His main philosophical interests include phenomenology, existentialism, the phenomenology of religion, and the philosophy of law, with a particular emphasis on Martin Heidegger. He has also explored the philosophical themes within popular culture, notably the music of U2, and his work often intersects with his interests in religion. Reviewers have commended his clear and comprehensive engagement with Heidegger's works, finding his interpretations compelling and relevant.
