The synopsis
Mario De Caro, born in 1963, is an Italian philosopher whose work primarily focuses on moral philosophy. He is a professor at the University of Rome III and has also held visiting professorships at Tufts University since 2000. De Caro's academic interests are diverse, encompassing the free-will controversy, the theory of action, the history of science, and the philosophical contributions of Donald Davidson and Hilary Putnam. He is also noted for his engagement with early modern philosophy. In collaboration with David Macarthur, De Caro has been a proponent of a metaphilosophical stance known as liberal naturalism. His academic career has included significant research periods as a visiting graduate student at MIT and as a Fulbright Fellow at Harvard University. De Caro has edited several notable works, including "Interpretations and Causes: New Perspectives on Donald Davidson's Philosophy," "Naturalism in Question" (with David Macarthur), "Cartographies of the Mind: Philosophy and Psychology in Intersection," "Naturalism and Normativity" (with David Macarthur), and "Philosophy in an Age of Science: Physics, Mathematics and Skepticism" (with David Macarthur). He also edited two volumes of philosophical papers by Hilary Putnam for Harvard University Press. In addition to his editorial roles, De Caro serves as an associate editor for "The Journal of the American Philosophical Association" and "Ancient Philosophy Today," and is a member of the editorial board for "The European Journal of Analytic Philosophy." His contributions to public discourse include regular columns in the cultural pages of "Il Sole 24 Ore" and articles for "The Times," "La Repubblica," and "Il Manifesto." De Caro has been actively involved in philosophical organizations, serving as vice president of the Consulta Nazionale di Filosofia and as a former president of the Italian Society of Analytic Philosophy (2010–2012). He has lectured extensively internationally at prestigious institutions and has been honored with the naming of the asteroid 5329 Decaro.
