The synopsis
Kate Alice Manne (born 1983) is an Australian philosopher and an associate professor of philosophy at Cornell University. Her academic work spans feminist philosophy, moral philosophy, and social philosophy. She earned her PhD in philosophy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with her dissertation focusing on practical reason in ethics. Manne's research explores concepts such as misogyny, sexism, and male privilege. Her influential book 'Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny' distinguishes between sexism and misogyny, defining the latter as a mechanism for maintaining patriarchal order. Her subsequent book, 'Entitled: How Male Privilege Hurts Women,' examines the societal consequences of male entitlement. Her most recent work, 'Unshrinking: How to Face Fatphobia,' addresses the stigmatization of fat people. Manne's contributions have earned her recognition, including being named one of the world's top 50 thinkers by Prospect Magazine and receiving the Lebowitz Prize in 2024.
