The synopsis
José María Ferrater Mora (October 30, 1912 – January 30, 1991) was a Spanish philosopher, essayist, and writer, widely recognized as the most prominent Catalan philosopher of the 20th century. His prolific output includes over 35 books, notably the comprehensive "Diccionario de filosofía" (Dictionary of Philosophy, 1941) and "Being and Death: An Outline of Integrationist Philosophy" (1962). Ferrater Mora's intellectual pursuits covered a broad spectrum of philosophical disciplines, including ontology, history of philosophy, metaphysics, anthropology, the philosophy of history and culture, epistemology, logic, philosophy of science, and ethics. He also ventured into directing films. A key aspect of his philosophical contribution was his advocacy for the moral inclusion of both humans and non-human animals, arguing for a continuum of moral consideration rather than a strict division. He developed a philosophical method known as integrationism, aimed at reconciling seemingly contradictory systems of thought by viewing opposing concepts as "limit concepts" or trends within reality, rather than absolute entities. His ontological stance, termed "monism sui generis," sought to bridge monism and pluralism through an emergentist framework where complex structures arise from simpler elements while possessing unique, irreducible properties. Ferrater Mora was also a vanguard figure in introducing applied ethics to the Spanish-speaking world and was a dedicated proponent of animal rights.
