The synopsis
Joseph Alois Ratzinger, known as Pope Benedict XVI, led the Catholic Church from 2005 to 2013. Born in Germany in 1927, he embarked on an academic career as a theologian before being appointed Archbishop of Munich and Freising in 1977 and later Cardinal. As Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith from 1981 to 2005, he was a significant figure in the Vatican. Elected Pope in 2005, he championed traditional Catholic teachings and emphasized a return to fundamental Christian values to counter secularization. He also revived several liturgical traditions and promoted the use of Latin. Benedict XVI resigned in 2013 due to health reasons, becoming the first Pope to do so in centuries. He passed away in 2022 at the age of 95. His papacy was marked by his prolific writings, his conservative theological stance, and his efforts to address challenges within the Church, although his handling of certain issues drew criticism.
