The synopsis

John McCarthy (September 4, 1927 – October 24, 2011) was an American computer scientist and cognitive scientist. He is widely regarded as one of the founders of artificial intelligence (AI), alongside Marvin Minsky, Allen Newell, and Herbert A. Simon. McCarthy co-authored the proposal for the Dartmouth workshop in 1956, which officially established AI as a distinct field and coined the term "artificial intelligence." He is credited with developing the symbolic programming language Lisp, which became a cornerstone of AI research. McCarthy also played a significant role in the development of ALGOL, popularized time-sharing systems, and invented garbage collection, a fundamental concept in automatic memory management. He spent the majority of his academic career at Stanford University, where he was a professor and played a key role in establishing the Stanford AI Laboratory. Throughout his career, McCarthy received numerous prestigious awards, including the Turing Award, the National Medal of Science, and the Kyoto Prize, recognizing his profound contributions to computer science and artificial intelligence.
