The synopsis
James G. Lennox (born January 11, 1948) is an emeritus professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh. He holds secondary appointments in the departments of Classics and Philosophy. Lennox is a prominent figure in the study of Aristotelian science, with groundbreaking work on Aristotle's biology and philosophy of biology. His research in the 1980s revived interest in Aristotle's biology, arguing for the consistency and demonstrative nature of his scientific methodology as presented in the Posterior Analytics. Lennox has also made influential contributions to the understanding of teleology in the history of biology, particularly concerning Charles Darwin's thought. Born in Canada, Lennox is a founding member of the Ayn Rand Society and has frequently served on its steering committee. He has held positions such as director of the Center for Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh, program committee chair for the International Society for the History of Philosophy of Science, and served on the editorial board of History of Philosophy Quarterly and Philosophy of Science. He has received fellowships and awards, including a senior fellowship at the Istituto di Studi Avanzati in Bologna and a visiting fellowship at the University of Cambridge. His research areas include Ancient Greek philosophy, science and medicine, and Charles Darwin. His recent publication is 'Aristotle on Inquiry: Erotetic Frameworks and Domain-Specific Norms' (2021).
