The synopsis
Ian Buchanan, born in 1969, is an Australian philosopher and academic currently serving as Professor of Critical Theory and Cultural Studies at the University of Wollongong. He earned his Bachelor of Arts and PhD from Murdoch University, with his doctoral dissertation focusing on 'Heterology: Towards a Transcendental Empiricist Approach to Cultural Studies.' Buchanan's scholarly work delves into the philosophies of prominent thinkers such as Michel de Certeau, Gilles Deleuze, and Fredric Jameson. He has also contributed significantly to the field of assemblage theory, distinguishing his approach as 'purpose-oriented' in contrast to systems-oriented models. His publications include "Assemblage Theory and Method" (2020), "Deleuze: A Metacommentary" (2000), and "Fredric Jameson: Live Theory" (2006). Buchanan has also edited special issues of academic journals and has been a faculty member at the University of Wollongong since 2011.
