The synopsis

Lushan Huiyuan, also known as Huiyuan of Mount Lu, was a prominent Chinese Buddhist teacher who lived from 334 to 416 AD. He established Donglin Temple at the foot of Mount Lu in Jiujiang and is posthumously recognized as the First Patriarch of the Pure Land School of Buddhism. He also founded the White Lotus Society, an early Buddhist community dedicated to Amitabha Buddha. Born in Shanxi province, Huiyuan moved south and became influential within the Eastern Jin Dynasty. He wrote extensively, including the significant text "On Why Monks Do Not Bow Down Before Kings" in 404 AD, where he argued for the independence of the Buddhist clergy from royal authority. His teachings encompassed various Buddhist doctrines such as vinaya, meditation, abhidharma, and Prajna. Huiyuan maintained intellectual correspondence with prominent figures like Kumarajiva and engaged in discussions with political leaders such as Huan Xuan to defend the clergy's status.
