Born in Istanbul to a Crimean Tatar family, he pursued his academic career at Ankara University, where he completed his PhD and later became a professor. His doctoral thesis pioneered socioeconomic analysis in Turkish historiography. İnalcık's research extended to archival work in Istanbul and engagement with international scholars. He taught as a visiting professor at prominent institutions like Columbia, Harvard, and Princeton Universities. In 1972, he joined the University of Chicago, teaching Ottoman history until 1986. He later returned to Turkey to found the history department at Bilkent University, where he taught until his death. İnalcık's scholarship aimed to provide a more nuanced and evidence-based understanding of Ottoman history, countering both biased Western accounts and nationalistic interpretations.
