The synopsis
Glen Francis Newey (30 May 1961 – 30 September 2017) was a political philosopher. He held positions at the University of Leiden, the Université libre de Bruxelles, and Keele University. Newey was a key figure in the "Realist" school of political philosophy, alongside Bernard Williams, John N. Gray, and Raymond Geuss. His research interests included toleration, the nature of politics, political morality, freedom of speech, and the political theory of Thomas Hobbes. He argued that modern liberalism, as exemplified by John Rawls, inadequately addressed the nature of politics. Newey also contributed to public discourse through regular blogging for the *London Review of Books*, where he offered critiques of capitalism and the marketization of higher education. He was a vocal advocate for free speech and academic freedom. His work on toleration questioned its coherence as a political ideal in contemporary liberal democracies. He died in a boating accident in Rotterdam in 2017.
