The synopsis
Girolamo Mercuriale (1530–1606) was an Italian philologist and physician, born in Forlì. He studied at Bologna, Padua, and Venice, earning his doctorate in 1555. His studies in Rome led to the publication of *De Arte Gymnastica* (1569), a seminal work on sports medicine. He became a professor at the University of Padua, where he translated Hippocrates and wrote on various medical topics. He served Emperor Maximilian II and was later appointed to professorships at Bologna and Pisa. Mercuriale's handling of the 1575 plague in Venice led to criticism, though he later published a treatise on the plague. He died in Forlì in 1606.
