The synopsis
Giovanni Ventimiglia is a Swiss-Italian philosopher, holding the position of full Professor of Philosophy at the University of Lucerne, Switzerland, where he also serves as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Theology and directs the Centre for Theology and Philosophy of Religions. His academic career includes a Visiting Professorship in Medieval Philosophy at the University of Italian Switzerland (2017-2022) and leadership roles in philosophical institutions. He founded the Institute for Philosophical Studies (ISFI) in Lugano in 2003 and served as its director until 2017, and also established the Aristotle College in 2015. Ventimiglia's research primarily centers on Thomas Aquinas and Thomism, particularly at the intersection of continental and analytical philosophical traditions, a field he contributes to through analytical Thomism. His scholarly interests encompass classical ontology, including the nature of being, analogy, God's names, and transcendentals, as well as medieval logic and its connection to contemporary analytic metaphysics. He also investigates the influence of Plato's unwritten doctrines on medieval commentaries of Aristotle's Metaphysics, the reception of Aristotle in medieval philosophy and theology, and Aquinas's impact on contemporary philosophy. Further areas of his work include the ontology of material and digital objects, cyberspace, and the relationship between philosophy and psychoanalysis.
