The synopsis

Gernot Böhme was a German philosopher and author born on January 3, 1937, in Dessau. He passed away on January 20, 2022. Böhme made significant contributions to the philosophy of science, the theory of time, aesthetics, ethics, and philosophical anthropology. He is widely recognized as the main pioneer of German ecocriticism, a field that explores the intricate relationship between human culture and the natural environment. Since 2005, he served as the director of the Institute for Practical Philosophy in Darmstadt, Hesse. Despite his acclaim as a public intellectual in Germany, a limited portion of his extensive work has been translated into English. Böhme pursued his academic studies in mathematics, physics, and philosophy at the University of Göttingen and Hamburg University, where he earned his PhD in 1965. His early research career included work as a research scientist at the Max Planck Institute under the guidance of Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker. From 1977 to 2002, he held the position of Professor of Philosophy at the Technical University of Darmstadt. His death at the age of 85 marked the end of a distinguished career in philosophical thought.
