George Arthur Lindbeck, born March 10, 1923, in Luoyang, China, and died January 8, 2018, in Florida, United States, was an American Lutheran theologian. His early life was spent in China and Korea, where his parents were missionaries. Lindbeck's academic journey included studies at Gustavus Adolphus College and Yale University, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1955. He was a prominent medievalist and ecumenicist, serving as a delegate observer to the Second Vatican Council and later as a member of the Joint Commission between the Vatican and the Lutheran World Federation. His most influential work, "The Nature of Doctrine: Religion and Theology in a Postliberal Age" (1984), is considered foundational to postliberal theology.
