The Philosopher
Ernesto Grassi
The synopsis
Ernesto Grassi was an Italian philosopher born on May 2, 1902, in Milan, Italy, and passed away on December 22, 1991, in Munich, Germany. He was known for his work in rhetoric and humanism. Grassi sought to move away from the metaphysical tradition, instead grounding his philosophy in the field of rhetoric, heavily influenced by Italian humanism. His seminal work, "Rhetoric as Philosophy," is recognized as a significant attempt to merge Italian humanism with rhetoric as a foundation for philosophical invention. Grassi's theoretical framework centered on three key faculties: Ingenium (ingenuity or innate talent), Work (the productive aspect of human endeavor), and Metaphor (the synthesis of Ingenium and Work). He believed these elements were crucial for the continuation of growth and development, intertwined with knowledge, rationality, and language.
