The synopsis
Epaminondas was a prominent Greek general and statesman from Thebes in the 4th century BC. He led Thebes out of Spartan subjugation and established the Theban Hegemony, a period of Theban dominance in Greek politics. His military innovations, particularly his tactical genius at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC, decisively defeated the Spartan army and ended Spartan military supremacy. He also initiated significant political changes, such as liberating the Messenian helots who had been enslaved by Sparta for centuries and supporting the founding of new cities like Megalopolis. Despite his military successes and political reforms, the lasting impact of his work was limited, as the cycle of shifting hegemonies continued, and Thebes was eventually destroyed by Alexander the Great.
