The synopsis
Edward Jonathan Lowe (24 March 1950 – 5 January 2014) was a British philosopher and academic, known as E. J. Lowe. He held the position of Professor of Philosophy at Durham University. Lowe was a prominent figure in contemporary philosophy, particularly recognized for his work in metaphysics, philosophy of mind, and philosophical logic. He was a proponent of non-Cartesian substance dualism, which posits a distinction between persons and their bodies while maintaining a connection between mental and physical properties. His contributions also include developing the four-category ontology, which categorizes reality into objects, kinds, attributes, and modes, and exploring the concept of essences in metaphysics. Lowe's work on John Locke offered a charitable interpretation of Locke's philosophy and emphasized its contemporary relevance. He published extensively, including several influential books and numerous academic articles, and supervised many PhD students throughout his career.
