The synopsis
Dionysodorus was an ancient Greek sophist philosopher and teacher, active around the late 5th century BCE. He was closely associated with his brother, Euthydemus of Chios, who was also a sophist. Dionysodorus and Euthydemus are depicted in Plato's dialogue *Euthydemus*, where they are portrayed as practitioners of sophistry and engaging in logical fallacies. According to Plato, the brothers were originally from the island of Chios, then moved to Thurii in Magna Graecia, and later came to Athens. Xenophon, in his *Memorabilia*, also mentions Dionysodorus, attributing to him the teaching of generalship. There are also possible biographical connections to an individual named Dionysodorus mentioned in the writings of Lysias, who served as a general and taxiarch supporting democracy. This has led to speculation that Dionysodorus may have become a naturalized Athenian citizen.
