The synopsis
Beth Lord (born 1976) is a Canadian philosopher known for her work in the history of philosophy, particularly focusing on Immanuel Kant and Baruch Spinoza, as well as contemporary Continental philosophy. She holds a professorship and serves as Head of School in the School of Divinity, History and Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen, a position she has held since 2013. Prior to her role at Aberdeen, Lord was part of the philosophy department at the University of Dundee, beginning in 2004. She earned her doctorate from the University of Warwick in 2004, with a thesis on Kant's productive ontology. In 2010, she established the Spinoza Research Network, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Her publications include "Spinoza's Ethics: An Edinburgh Philosophical Guide" (2010) and "Kant and Spinozism: Transcendental Idealism and Immanence from Jacobi to Deleuze" (2011), which explores the connections between Kantian and Spinozan thought through various philosophers. Lord also co-edited "The Continuum Companion to Continental Philosophy" and edited "Spinoza Beyond Philosophy." In 2023, she was involved in an incident where the University of Aberdeen, under her leadership as Head of School, violated UK GDPR legislation regarding trade union activities.
