Anthony Sean Neal

Anthony Sean Neal is an American philosopher and author, currently serving as a professor of philosophy at Mississippi State University. He holds degrees from Morehouse College, Mercer University, and Clark Atlanta University, where he specialized in African American Philosophy and Religion. Neal has been recognized with several honors, including the Beverly B. and Gordon W. Gulmon Dean's Eminent Scholar title in 2021 and induction into the Morehouse College Collegium of Scholars in 2019. He is also a Fellow of the American Institute of Philosophical and Cultural Thought and an American Philosophical Association Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh. His scholarly work delves into Aesthetics, Africana Philosophy (including African American Modern Era and NeoClassical African Philosophy), Critical Theory, Neo-Platonism, and Philosophy of Religion. He is particularly noted for his expertise on the philosophy of Howard Thurman and the Modern Era of the African American Freedom Struggle. Neal is also a past president of the Mississippi Philosophical Association. In April 2026, he was inducted as an honorary member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Mississippi State University.
