The synopsis
Abul A'la al-Maududi (1903–1979) was an influential Islamic scholar, theologian, jurist, historian, journalist, and political activist. He is considered one of the most systematic thinkers of modern Islam, whose numerous works covered Qur'anic exegesis, hadith, law, philosophy, and history. Maududi sought to revive Islam and propagate what he understood as "true Islam," believing Islam was essential for politics and advocating for the institution of sharia. He opposed secularism, nationalism, and socialism, viewing them as influences of Western imperialism. Maududi founded the Jamaat-e-Islami, an Islamist political party, and significantly impacted political Islam in South Asia and the wider Muslim world.
