The synopsis

Abhinavagupta was a highly influential Indian philosopher, mystic, and aesthetician who hailed from Kashmir. Born around 950 CE and living until approximately 1016 CE, he was a true polymath, excelling not only in philosophy but also as a musician, poet, dramatist, exegete, theologian, and logician. His contributions left a significant mark on Indian culture. He is particularly renowned for his role in systematizing the philosophical thought of Kashmir Shaivism. His magnum opus, *Tantrāloka*, serves as a comprehensive synthesis of the entire Trika system, encompassing its philosophical and practical aspects. Another notable contribution was in the field of aesthetics, with his commentary on Bharata Muni's *Nāṭyaśāstra*, known as *Abhinavabhāratī*. He came from a Brahmin family of scholars and mystics whose ancestors had migrated from Kannauj. Throughout his life, Abhinavagupta studied under numerous teachers, absorbing knowledge from various philosophical schools, including Vaishnavism, Buddhism, and different branches of Shaivism. Despite his profound intellectual and spiritual achievements, he remained unmarried and dedicated his life to teaching and writing, living in a supportive environment with his family and disciples.
